The air conditioner sounded like a diesel generator, but had no effect. My office felt like damn sauna. It was the last week of my rotation, what made me extra moody. I missed Jolanda and the kids. Fortunately, in three days I would go back to Holland, for two weeks. Work in the Algerian oil industry paid well, but six weeks in the middle of the Sahara takes a toll.

Outside, under the blazing sun, the construction workers were roughing up concrete foundations with rattling pneumat-ic hammers. Poor bastards. They wore orange company over-alls, a helmet, hearing protection, safety glasses, protective gloves and work boots. And they had wrapped a cloth around their head, against the desert dust. That filthy stuff stuck to your skin and got into every crack of your body. Ten minutes outside, and you’d feel like a junkyard dog.
